The National Book Development Board (NBDB) recently announced the appointment of Graciela M. Cayton as its new Executive Director. Cayton, whose last job was as consultant to the Philippine International Trading Corporation, an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, has extensive experience in corporate strategy, business development, and management of various advocacy programs.
The NBDB is a government entity tasked with the development of the book publishing industry in the Philippines. It holds the annual Philippine International Literature Festival, the National Book Awards, the National Children’s Book Awards, and various reading advocacy activities and bookselling events. The NBDB is under the Department of Education and works with other government entities and private organization in formulating policy affecting book development in the country.
“I am honored to be given this responsibility at the NBDB,” says Cayton, who took office this January. “I am looking forward to taking part in the board’s various advocacies as its new Executive Director.” She adds, “Moving forward, I believe the NBDB can play a significant role in crafting policy and enacting programs that encourage authors and artists in the creation of content, promote deeper engagement and strategic collaboration among industry stakeholders, as well as help provide readers, especially students greater access to books."
Cayton’s appointment follows the promotion as Deputy Executive Director of Camille V. Dela Rosa, a writer and teacher who has been with the NBDB since 2010. She was appointed to the position of Deputy Executive Director October of last year. The appointments of Cayton and Dela Rosa points to an exciting and dynamic future for the NBDB and the Philippine book industry.
