    Lassitude and Other Stories

    Carlos Cortes

Winner, National Book Award, Fiction, 1998
The stories in Lassitude range from very short (fewer than 400 words) to very long (21,000 words). The prose goes from elegiac to ironic to grunge. The settings include southern Cebu, Cebu City, Mandaue, Mactan, outer space, Paris, the ruins of Stonehenge. These are 1990s stories, written on the run. Carlos Cortes has come down from the ivory tower in which he used to write, and reinvented himself, for better or for worse. These stories, dashed off whenever he could give himself up to lassitude, are the offerings of a writer who has kept the faith.
