Mga Tulang Tulala: Mga Piling Tula sa Filipino, Bikol, at Rinconada

    Kristian Sendon Cordero

Winner, Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award, Literature, 2006
Paz Verdades Santos, a literary historian and critic notes that one of the many strengths of Cordero’s poetry is the tone of maturity that characterized most of his poems: “…Fortunately, he has not had to look too far for both material and metaphor grounded as he is in Bikol lore. He reflects on folk beliefs and festivals such as the moon-swallowing Bakunawa, the practice of Exorcism in Santigwar, and Iriga’s harvest feast of the Tinagba as well as the everyday Bikol scenes such as the marketplace, the kamgum tree and pregnant cats. He turns all these into stinging social commentary on such issues as traditional politicians, lack of basic services and class inequality. Yet his social realism is tempered with humor, whether in diction or rhythm. The humor is naturally biting and painful, for the issues he takes up are too heavy and all too real.”
