Rizal and Spain: An Essay in Biographical Context

    Miguel A. Bernad, SJ

Winner, National Book Award, History, 1986

The discovery of a letter written about Rizal by a Jesuit missionary to a fellow Jesuit, both former teachers of Jose Rizal at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, led to this essay by Fr. Miguel Bernad, also a Jesuit. The letter writer was Father Francisco de Paula Sanchez, the Jesuit missionary who had spent several months with Rizal in Dapitan during the hero’s exile there. He was responding to a letter from Father Jose Vilaclara in Manila, on one subject: Jose Rizal.
